Digital Awareness UK partner with UN Refugee Agency and Vodafone Foundation to empower half a million young refugees

November 22, 2021

Digital Awareness UK has teamed up with Instant Network Schools, a programme set up by Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency), to empower up to half a million young refugee and host community students living across Africa to use the internet safely.

Our team has developed the Digital Awareness Curriculum in four languages on world-leading adaptive learning platform Area9, to deliver an interactive and immersive learning experience through engaging videos, quizzes and resources.

Working with Instant Network Schools, who are transforming existing classrooms into multimedia hubs for learning, the Digital Awareness Curriculum is being rolled out in refugee hosting schools across Kenya, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Mozambique and Egypt.

Digital Awareness Curriculum Learning Resource

After conducting in-depth research to uncover the foundation skills and competencies that these students need to be proficient in, the following topic areas were identified:

·       Protecting personal information
·       Creating strong, secure passwords
·       Building a positive digital footprint
·       Managing fake news
·       Spotting and avoid scams
·       Being kind online
·       Connecting with people safely

Emma Robertson, CEO of Digital Awareness UK said “it has been a privilege to have been given the opportunity to help these young people use technology safely and responsibly. This is a pivotal moment for organisations to come together and harness innovative online learning solutions to help reduce the digital divide and ensure that all children have the digital literacy skills needed to flourish in the digital world.”

Digital Awareness UK is also working with Instant Network Schools to develop educational resources including an eight-part Digital Discovery video campaign to help their students search for and critically assess information online.
